Teach Out: Building Connections and Kicking Off the School Year Right

September 5, 2024 || by Shane Hilde (CVCA)

At Central Valley Christian Academy (CVCA), the second week of school is always an exciting time filled with adventure, connection, and fun during our annual Teach Out event. This two-day experience provides a wonderful opportunity for all students and staff to bond outside the classroom, setting the tone for a fantastic school year.

Teach Out is designed to foster connections between students and staff, encouraging a sense of community and belonging. As someone who values building relationships with students, I particularly enjoy the hiking activities we offer. Hiking in nature provides a low-stakes environment where I can get to know my students beyond the classroom walls. Walking alongside them on a scenic trail, discussing everything from their summer experiences to their hopes for the year, allows us to bond in a relaxed setting. These personal connections make education so much easier and more enjoyable for both students and teachers.

This year, the event was held at the scenic Soquel Campground, with activities spread across the Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz areas. Each grade participated in unique activities tailored to their interests, all supervised by our dedicated faculty and staff.

Freshmen explored the San Luis Wildlife Refuge and enjoyed a scenic hike at Nisene Marks State Park, offering a chance to learn about local wildlife and appreciate the natural beauty of California. Sophomores visited the Monterey Aquarium and participated in bird watching at Moss Landing, engaging with marine life and enjoying the peacefulness of nature. Juniors took a liter

ary journey through the Steinbeck Museum and a tour of Monterey, connecting their studies with real-world experiences. Seniors embraced adventure with a kayak tour in Santa Cruz and a fun-filled afternoon of mini-golf and group activities. In the evenings, students and staff came together for meals, games, and worship, creating an environment of unity and shared purpose. Through these experiences, students built lasting relationships with their peers and teachers, laying a strong foundation for the school year ahead.

Teach Out isn't just about having fun— it's about creating a community where every student feels connected and valued, setting the stage for a successful year of learning and growth at CVCA.
